Viva Las Vegas

Posted by Tom Awtry on November 16, 2007

My Beliefs, Life & TimesOf all the debates that I’ve been able to see (I’m in Thailand), last night’s debate in Las Vegas was by far the best I’ve seen. The questions were well thought out, the narration was good because the narrators along with the audience made the candidates stick to the questions proposed, and most of all my candidate Governor Richardson sounded, appeared and responded to the questions with direct forward thinking responses, which usually included examples of his experience; in other words – just like a President.

The key points within the debate centered around two issues that are very dear to me, namely, the War in Iraq, since I’m a former Vietnam Veteran and understand what our troops are going through and Health Care, since I’m 59 years of age, and I’m sure some day I will need to rely on a well conceived Health Care Plan, such as Governor Richardson implemented within his state of New Mexico.

What I didn’t like, most of all was Senator Clinton’s answer to the issue of fixing Social Security. “Getting a group of people together in a room to find a solution to the Social Security problem”, tells me the Senator doesn’t have a plan and again like other issues, she’s taking the “wait and see” attitude or “go with the flow”. During this coming election I want to read and judge a candidate’s plan on the each issue that’s important to me, I guess I’m selfish that way, before the candidate gets my vote.

One issue during the debate that I feel needs serious though on is the “Gender Issue”, which Senator Clinton seems to be getting a lot of mileage out of, and that is the old Harry Truman saying of “get out of the kitchen if you can’t stand the heat”. Perhaps humorous today to some degree, and perhaps not even an issue to be considered for those of us Americans who feel a woman is as capable of leadership as a man, but when you’re talking with international leaders where a woman is looked down upon, such as in the Middle East, Asia and Central Asia; “gender” most certainly is an important issue.

Madeline Albright, former Sectary of State and today’s current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have had limited, if any success, in resolving the problems in the aforementioned regions. Again, which candidate has experience in finding workable solutions in those areas and has been nominated for the fifth time for a Nobel Peace Prize, Governor Richardson.

What tonight’s debate has left me with is; I sticking with my choice from day one, Governor Richardson, and I grateful that my country is open minded enough to accept both a woman candidate and an Afro-American candidate for the presidency within my life time.

I’ve seen many blogs where there owners copied articles from established web sites, and in some cases implying the scripted content was authored by themselves, which I dislike and disapprove of. It may appear in this posting that I have done the same, which is only partly true.
Currently I am working and residing in Thailand, with plans to return to the states within the coming months and actively campaign for Governor Richardson, in his quest for the Presidency. Since I’m limited to Internet participation only and cannot personally attend formal functions, rallies, or physical assistance; this blog and posting to past along the “Word” is the only way I can provide support to the Governor’s campaign.
Hopefully the readers of this posting will be able to understand what I have personally authored from that of what I have copied from Governor Richardson’s web site or transcribed from the campaign’s posted videos.

What’s Most Important to You – The Voter

Posted by Tom Awtry on November 11, 2007

My Beliefs, Life & TimesToday I was looking over, as usual, what the presidential candidates are saying and have published concerning the country’s economy, which seems to the leading issue among American voters for this next Presidential Election, next November. A recent article that appeared on CNN’s web site was a poll conducted by CNN/Opinion Research Corp., asking the question “what’s most important to you in this next election?” and the largest concern most prospective voters have is our US economy.

Two months ago my candidate, Governor Bill Richardson, presented his plan to correct and revamp our economy and place the middle class workers back in control of their future. During his presentation, as seen in the video below; the problems the Governor spoke of two months ago have worsened, so consider giving his plan a read, the video a see and perhaps casting your vote his way, so we can pull ourselves out of this rut, the present administration has created for us.

Bill Richardson Outlines Plan for American Jobs and Economy

Gov. Bill Richardson announces his plan to protect the middle class and create quality jobs.
August 17, 2007

Jobs and the Economy

Our country faces a great economic challenge. Increasingly, highly-skilled workers across the globe are competing for — and winning — the most desirable jobs available. Many of these workers come from nations with governments that have made the three essential choices that grow economies and create jobs:

  1. They are choosing to invest in the future rather than spending extravagantly on present-day consumption
  2. They are investing in science and technology, and
  3. They are investing in their workers through education and workforce development
  4. I have a plan to meet these challenges by encouraging innovation and expanding economic opportunity.

Restoring Fiscal Discipline to Our Government

Under President Bush, our country’s national debt has skyrocketed to a record-breaking $9 trillion, with interest payments on the debt reaching $404 billion last year alone. Our next President must have the discipline to rein in spending so that we may return to the budget surpluses we experienced during the Clinton Administration. As Governor, I consistently demonstrated fiscal responsibility, and as President I will restore America’s financial strength.

Investing in Technology and Innovation

If America is to retain its leadership in the global marketplace, it must renew its emphasis on science and technology and establish new incentives for innovation. As President, I will achieve this through an aggressive combination of tax credits, Green Jobs programs, and the establishment of 250 Math, Science, and Innovation Academies throughout the country.

Investing in and Protecting the American Workforce

A highly skilled, well-paid workforce is central to sustained job growth and a healthy economy. Our country must establish a strong foundation of improved education and a workforce development system that’s streamlined and targeted to the needs of the 21st century economy. We will make this happen through tax credits that offer incentives for good-paying jobs in all sectors and regions of the country, including manufacturing and rural areas.

The Bottom Line

Our nation is more than a piece of land or a set of laws. Our nation embodies the belief that tomorrow can be better than today.

Together, we can do this. We can restore fiscal responsibility to our government. We can be the catalyst for innovation. And we can keep America’s promise to its Middle Class workers.

A strong economy is the engine of everything that America does and everything we want this country to be. I have the experience and the record of accomplishment to meet the economic challenges we face and to lead our country into the future.

Energy: Buying from Countries Who Hate Us

Posted by Tom Awtry on November 10, 2007

My Beliefs, Life & TimesRemember waiting in the gas lines of the 70’s?

Presently we are locked into word battles and imposing sanctions against Iran, Venezuela and have difficulties with Iraq and Saudi Arabia; and we’re depending on the aforementioned countries to provide us with approximately sixty-five percent of our nations oil, isn’t that verging on ridiculous? Are the folks in Washington part of this country we refer to as America? Don’t we have an Energy plan to become self sufficient?

Former Secretary of Energy, Governor Bill Richardson’s proposed energy plan is beginning to look better and better to me. It’s not going to be easy for Americans to adapt to Governor Richardson’s plan, but we must start some time, and if we’re going to do so, we have to have a plan with merit, I feel his plan does.

I’m really upset this morning! Below is a video, where an inexperienced news commentator is interviewing Governor Richardson about our serious energy problem and while the Governor is trying to explain his energy plan it seems that the News Director of the program feels it more important to make light of both the problem and the only presidential candidate with experience to provide a solution to the energy situation we have gotten ourselves into. After seeing this video CNBC will receive little of my time in the future.

Please consider reviewing Governor Richardson’s proposed Energy plan with all seriousness, listed below the video.

Gov. Bill Richardson Discusses Rising Oil Prices on CNBC

Governor Bill Richardson talks about rising oil prices and his energy plan on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
November 08, 2007

Update:
Salt Lake City, UT Mayor Rocky Anderson writes in The Nation magazine.

If ending the tragic, self-destructive occupation of Iraq is indeed a line-in-the-sand issue, only Bill Richardson stands out among the leading candidates as the choice for President.

While Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards refuse to pledge an end to the occupation, even by 2013, Bill Richardson commits clearly to pulling out all US troops. He recognizes that the occupation is widely despised, aiding in the recruitment of terrorists beyond Osama bin Laden’s wildest dreams. With Clinton, Obama or Edwards, we will get more of the same: many billions of dollars spent on ruinous military efforts, with more hatred toward the United States, more terrorism, and more death and destruction. If you can’t support that result, let it be the line beyond which you will not step in supporting any candidate who is on the wrong side.

Energy

We must “Act Boldly and Act Now” in order to make America a Clean Energy Nation like I made New Mexico a Clean Energy State. Consider this a call to action, for Congress, the energy industry, and the public. I am calling for a New American Revolution — an energy and climate revolution.

Cut Oil Demand: 50% by 2020

That means reducing oil imports from around 65% to 10-15%. We can do this in part by getting the 100 mile per gallon (mpg) car into the marketplace. We must work to double the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, or CAFE, to 50 mpg by 2020. And we will set a life-cycle low-carbon fuel standard that reduces the carbon impact of our liquid fuels by 30% by 2020.

Create New Efficiencies And Energy Sources in the Electrical Sector: 50% by 2040

I am calling for a national renewable portfolio standard of 30% by 2020 that will rise to 50% by 2040. This is aggressive, but necessary as we start using more electricity for automobiles. I will push for an energy productivity law requiring a 20% improvement in energy productivity by 2020. We could save customers $21 billion a year by 2020.

Dramatically Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: 90% by 2050

20% by 2020, 80% by 2040 — ten years faster than scientists say is necessary because we must lead the world, and we can’t afford the possibility of backsliding and inaction. We will start with a market-based cap and trade system for greenhouse gas emissions to create incentives for the electric and industrial sectors to make significant reductions in their carbon emissions. Economists say the world can protect itself from drastic climate change at a cost of 1-3% of our economic activity. We can afford to protect the climate. Given the risks of catastrophic climate change, we can’t afford not to do it.

Lead By Example and Restore America as the World’s Leader

We must return to the international negotiating table and support mandatory world-wide limits on global warming pollution. We will work closely with fast-growing nations. I will cooperate with the European Union, the World Bank, and other allies to help finance the incremental cost of “doing it right.” I will create a North American Energy Council with Mexico and Canada, which supply about 20% of our oil, and make sure our relations with these neighbors are firm and friendly. As we reduce our demand for foreign oil, we should work with the Persian Gulf nations, and our partners at the UN, to create a multilateral system for protecting the Persian Gulf so that within ten years, the U.S. presence there could be sharply and safely reduced.

Get It All Done Without Breaking the Bank

We will raise some revenue, from the sales of carbon permits, for example. Further, I will get out the “green scissors” to cut back on wrongly-placed tax subsidies. Over time, this program will yield huge productivity increases in our economy, as well as significant budget savings and revenues. We will create more than ten times as much value in the American economy by reducing our oil imports as we spend to make this program happen.

Invite the Oil Companies to Become Energy Companies

I know people love to hate the oil companies. They have been raking in huge profits. But I want to invite them to become energy companies, and invest in our thriving new energy economy. They are invited to the table, but they aren’t going to run the table the way they have for the last six years.

The Bottom Line

Americans need energy to get to work, we need heat and electricity in our homes, schools and workplaces. We are hurt by unpredictable energy price cycles, and by our nation’s energy policy failures. The way out of the cycle is to create competition, to support energy productivity, new technologies and alternative fuels. And everyone — every American — must make an effort to make us energy independent and combat global warming. Our national security and our planet depend on it. It’s about creating a new energy economy here in the United States, and doing it quickly, with broad, bold strokes. It’s the way to a bright, strong, prosperous future for the United States — and for the world. I called for an energy revolution — and now, today, I call on you to join it.

Senator Biden – I think you’re wrong

Posted by Tom Awtry on November 9, 2007

My Beliefs, Life & TimesA short while back Senator Joseph Biden displayed unfavorable Democratic Party unity by, what I consider, making an unfounded statement regarding Governor Bill Richardson’s desire to remove our troops from Iraq within a three to six month time frame. Simple common logic warrants an individual to consider if we moved in and took over Iraq over in two to four months and setup the preverbal “Green Zone” within this same timeframe, then getting out would most definitely take less time.

Being in the service myself, and servicing in Vietnam, along with having the experience of aiding in the moving our base camp of some 1,100 troopers, approximately 300 kilometers to a new location; tells me that with today’s highly mechanized military, there should be no problem with our forces in Iraq to depart in three or four months. A blog posting has just been authored from US Army (Ret.) LTC Lon Cross, which states his feelings and possible timeframe on departing Iraq.

Truth be known, I think Senator Biden, who I do respect, is paying to much attention to the often wrong polls, which unknowingly and unwisely feel that either Senators Clinton or Obama have sowed up the Democratic Candidacy for President next year. Furthermore, I feel his remarks were made in haste in order to perhaps receive additional “press”.

As for the polls themselves, I’m currently residing in Thailand, but having been born and raised in Iowa and still having family there; my relatives inform me of there opinion, which is “Iowa has not made up its mind”. My relatives are very politically minded and follow the candidates closer, I feel, than today’s opinionaters of the news for their profitable networks.

The video below, by Governor Richardson, on Iraq, I feel represents forethought and courage, please render it a see and consider reviewing the Governor’s plan for our removal of troops from the country.

The Responsible Way Forward for Iraq and our Military

In a major policy address, Governor Richardson once again called for removing all troops from Iraq and laid out his plan for improving efficiency and creating a military prepared to handle a post-Iraq War world.
October 04, 2007

Iraq

The Richardson Plan for Ending the War
I have a one-point plan on the Iraq War — END IT.

We must get all of our troops out quickly and safely so that a new political process can begin.
Our military presence in Iraq is prolonging the violence, costing us more than $10 billion a month, and distracting us from the war against Al Qaeda. George Bush’s “surge” has failed: this summer was the bloodiest yet, and there’s no end in sight. Our troops have done everything we’ve asked them to do — but they cannot win someone else’s civil war. We need to get them out so that a new political process can begin.

There are seven components to my plan to end the war and stabilize Iraq, but the most important step, upon which all others depend, is to remove ALL of our troops quickly.

What we need to do:

  • Remove ALL Troops: Only when the Iraqis know we are leaving will they start seeing us as partners, instead of occupiers. A complete withdrawal gives us the leverage we now lack to get the warring factions to compromise, while our presence fuels the insurgency. The Iraqis must take responsibility for their country, and only a complete withdrawal gives them the incentive to kick out al Qaeda and heal their country. Any plan that leaves troops behind will allow the war to drag on, and will cost more American lives.
  • Withdraw as Quickly as Possible: We should start redeploying now. The longer we stay, the more people die, the further the situation deteriorates, and the more damage we do both to our military and to our reputation. Only when we are out of this quagmire can we refocus on the real war against Al Qaeda — the terrorists who attacked us on 9-11, and who are still headquartered along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border — not in Iraq.
  • A Diplomatic Surge: Iraq’s crisis is a political crisis. It cannot be solved militarily. We need a surge of diplomacy to bring Iraq’s factions together, to engage all of Iraq’s neighbors in stabilization, and to put together a coalition of donor nations to aid reconstruction.

How We Do It:

  • De-authorize the War and Fund Redeployment: Last November, the American people voted for the Democrats because they expected them to end the war. Congress should do what it was elected to do, by passing a resolution that de-authorizes the war under Article 1 of the Constitution and the War Powers Act. And they should pass funding only to safely redeploy our troops, not to leave them endlessly in the middle of a civil war. Congress can and should act now to end this war.
  • Remove ALL the troops from Iraq: We must get our troops out of Iraq as quickly and safely as possible. Since the war began, we have rotated up to 240,000 troops into and out of Iraq in as few as 3 months. The logistics and details of a withdrawal must come from our military commanders on the ground. I hope Congress will force President Bush to end this war, but if Congress fails, I will instruct our military leaders to get our troops out as quickly as possible. Steps should include:
  1. Identify the units we can phase out quickly. Support units and their large bases should go first and combat units next.
  2. Identify the equipment we can leave to the Iraqis and the equipment we must bring home.
  3. Move troops and equipment into Kuwait, and to regional bases where we are welcome such as in Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
  4. Redeploy troops from these regional bases to Afghanistan and other locations where they can fight actual threats to America. In addition, we should bring as many troops as possible home to start rejoining their families.
  • Lead a Regional and Global Diplomacy: The hard political work begins as our troops start to leave.
  1. We must use the leverage of our withdrawal to bring the factions to the negotiating table.
  2. The United States must lead this effort and involve all of Iraq’s neighbors, including Syria and Iran, in a regional conference modeled on the Dayton conference which ended the war in Bosnia. Key objectives of the conference should be assurances of non-interference and the creation of a multilateral, UN-led Muslim peacekeeping force.
  3. We must also convene a donor conference of wealthy Arab states to fund Iraqi reconstruction. All of Iraq’s neighbors have an interest in preventing Iraq’s civil war from spiraling even further out of control, and they should all play a part in stopping the violence.

Another Big Endorsement in Iowa

Posted by Tom Awtry on November 9, 2007

My Beliefs, Life & TimesMy candidate, Governor Bill Richardson, received another major endorsement from STAR*PAC (Stop the Arms Race Political Action Committee) in Iowa, for the Governor’s firm stance against on the “never-ending” war in Iraq.

The recently released news article appeared in The Des Moines Register, newspaper and on  Governor Richardson’s web site. The article did not site a reason that I feel is important to the issue of the Iraq War, and that is the Governor’s “Health Care” plan for returning veterans and veterans that have returned with physical and mental injuries. The Governor’s Health Plan for Vetrans is listed below.

Reading through the new article it appears STAR*PAC preformed a pretty diligent evaluation of all the Democratic candidates for the Presidential election, next November, and for this coming state election on the 3rd of January this coming year.

Divided We Fail Forum: Paying for Universal Health Care

Gov. Richardson explains how he will pay for universal health care by cutting bureaucratic costs and investing in preventive care. September 20, 2007

Veterans

I believe that we have an obligation to defend those who have defended us. It is a national disgrace that our veterans return home from war to horrific conditions at Walter Reed and endless waits to get medical care. Our veterans deserve the highest-quality care that this country can offer, and as President, I won’t be satisfied until they have it.

Create a “Heroes Health Card”

This card, which will be issued to every single veteran upon leaving the military, will provide our returning servicemen and servicewomen with the healthcare they need, when and where they need it. As President, I will call on every provider in America to accept this card and coordinate care with the veteran’s local VA hospital.

Take immediate steps to correct the disgraceful conditions at Walter Reed

The scandal at Walter Reed Army Medical Center earlier this year was an outrage that offends all Americans, and especially those in uniform who have sacrificed so much on behalf of this country. When I am President, I will ensure that we clean up President Bush’s mess, as well as those at other military medical centers and VA hospitals throughout the country. Our veterans and military personnel deserve high-quality healthcare, and it is a travesty to provide them with anything less.

Fight for a G.I. Bill for the 21st Century

The G.I. Bill has been one of the most successful pieces of federal legislation in our nation’s history, helping millions of veterans attend college over the decades. Unfortunately, it has not kept pace with inflation or the skyrocketing costs of higher education. As President, I will make sure that the funding for the GI bill is increased so that we can expand our troops’ educational opportunities.

Expand research into prosthetics and other medical technology

One of the unspoken tragedies of the past several years has been the untold number of our soldiers, marines, sailors, and airmen who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan disabled from wounds suffered in those countries. Advances in prosthetics and other medical technologies, however, offer hope that the quality of life for these heroes can be improved. As President, I will significantly increase federal funding for research into these fields.

The Bottom Line

We ask so much of our men and women in uniform — and they deserve more than they’ve been getting from their government. It is time for a change. We must honor those who have put their lives on the line defending our nation. When I am President, we will.
